CHAPTER TWO
THE KETTLE BEGAN to whistle behind her as she heard the words leave her mouth. She hadnât intended to say anything this soon, and certainly not to Christophe. They were friends but not overly intimate. They saw each other a few times a year, hung out now and again like they had tonight, at industry functions, that sort of thing. She hadnât even told her brother about the baby yet. And by the staggered look on Christopheâs face, she wished she could take back the words. What had she been thinking, confiding such a thing?
Instead, she turned, removed the kettle from the burner, and poured the boiling water into mugs. Without asking, she dropped a bag into his, knowing that heâd drink the tea anyway after a bombshell like that.
There was a quiet thunk as she put the kettle back on the stove and turned to face him again.
âThat explains a lot,â he said weakly, and his gaze dropped to her belly and then back up to her face. He blushed when he realized what heâd done. âSorry,â he offered.
âNothing to see there yet. Iâm not quite through my first trimester. So yeah, it explains the dash to the ladiesâ tonight and why I didnât eat.â She fought through her embarrassment. âDo you want milk in your tea?â
âNo, thank you,â he replied, and she dipped the bags out of the mugs with a spoon and put them on a saucer before handing him his cup.
âLetâs go sit,â she said quietly. âAnd Iâll explain.â
She led him into the living room and took a seat on the sofa, cradling the warm mug in her hands. The soothing scent of peppermint wafted up, and she took a cautious sip. Peppermint tea seemed to be the one thing that settled her stomach these days.
He sat next to her, but not too close, holding his steaming mug but not paying it any attention at all. âYouâre how far along?â
âEleven weeks or so. Hopefully the morning sickness, or all-day sickness, rather, will ease up soon.â
Silence fell between them for a moment, and then Christophe asked the question sheâd been waiting for. âAnd the father?â
âEric.â
She didnât have to say more. Sheâd dated Eric for nearly two years, and occasionally the stockbroker attended events with her. Eric Walsh was practically perfect, as her mother continually reminded her.
âSo are congratulations in order? I mean, how do you feel about it? How does Eric feel? Does this mean you two will finally be getting married?â
She took a sip of tea to buy herself some time. Heâd fired out four questions and none of them were easy to answer. Sheâd already gone through all of thisâwith Eric, with her parents.
Sophie was quiet for so long that Christophe reached out and took her hand, a sheepish grin on his face and that eyebrow doing its quirky thing again. âSorry, was that too much?â
âA little,â she admitted.
âThen maybe I should just say, what are your plans?â He sat back against the cushions.
She put the tea on a coaster on the coffee table, pleased that heâd kept his fingers linked with hers.
